A landslide struck a riverside community in Chongqing, southwestern China, on Tuesday morning, trapping several people despite an evacuation effort. State media reported that a local community worker spotted rocks falling from a hillside around 8:00 a.m. local time and immediately issued an emergency warning. Authorities began evacuating more than 60 residents, but the landslide hit at 9:08 a.m., before the evacuation could be completed. Footage aired by state broadcaster showed a large section of the hillside collapsing onto a cluster of homes near the river. Rescue teams are currently searching for those trapped. Chongqing, a mountainous region, is prone to landslides, especially during the rainy season. Further details on casualties are pending as rescue operations continue.
