Rubio: Iran Uses Strait of Hormuz as Global Leverage

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has accused Iran of using the Strait of Hormuz as a tool to pressure other nations. Speaking to reporters, Rubio said, "It's clear that Iran, at least some people in Iran, want to control the straits and hold that as leverage against the world." He called on other countries to take more responsibility for protecting global shipping through the strategic waterway. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. About one-fifth of the world's oil passes through it, making it critical for global energy supplies. Iran has threatened to close the strait in past disputes, raising fears of disruption to oil shipments. Rubio's comments come amid ongoing tensions in the region. The United States already patrols the area to keep shipping lanes open. But Rubio urged allies to contribute more, whether by sending ships or providing money. "The United States will do and continue to do what it needs to, to protect global shipping, but other countries need to begin to step up," he said. The accusation adds to years of friction between Washington and Tehran over Iran's nuclear program and regional influence. Iran has not yet responded to Rubio's statement. The White House and Pentagon have not immediately commented on any new US actions.
