The Uttarakhand government has stopped the cutting of trees for a road project connecting Rishikesh and Bhaniyawala. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered the suspension on Tuesday following widespread protests from local residents and environmental activists. The project, part of efforts to improve connectivity in the region, had sparked anger over the felling of hundreds of trees. In a statement, the Chief Minister said the tree felling will remain halted until a consensus is reached with all stakeholders. He assured that the government will consider alternative routes or methods to minimize environmental damage. The decision comes after several days of demonstrations, with protesters blocking roads and demanding a halt to the deforestation. The Rishikesh-Bhaniyawala road is intended to ease traffic congestion and boost tourism in the area, which is a gateway to the Himalayas. However, critics argue that the loss of trees could harm the local ecosystem and increase the risk of landslides. Environmental groups have called for a comprehensive environmental impact assessment before any further work. Officials say they will hold meetings with local communities, experts, and activists to find a solution that balances development with environmental protection. The suspension is seen as a temporary measure until a long-term plan is agreed upon.
