Chinese Firm Seeks Compensation from UK Over British Steel Takeover

By TrendingWire Newsroom

A Chinese company that previously owned British Steel has demanded compensation from the UK government for losses incurred after the nationalisation of the steelmaker. Jingye Group, which acquired British Steel in 2020, issued a statement on Sunday via Chinese social media platform WeChat, calling for payment for its investment losses. The UK government took operational control of British Steel last year after Jingye announced it was considering closing the blast furnaces at its Scunthorpe plant in northern England. These furnaces were the last in the UK to produce "virgin steel" from raw materials. The nationalisation effectively ended Jingye's ownership. Jingye stated that it had invested heavily in the company and that the government's actions had caused financial harm. The company did not specify the amount of compensation it is seeking. The UK government has not yet responded publicly to the demand. British Steel has a long history in the UK, but has faced challenges in recent years due to global steel overcapacity, rising costs, and environmental regulations. Jingye's takeover was seen as a lifeline for the struggling company, but the planned closure of the blast furnaces raised concerns about job losses and the future of UK steel production. The dispute adds to tensions between China and the UK over trade and investment. The outcome could have implications for future Chinese investment in British industries.
