Why Does the World Cup Still Have a Third-Place Match?
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Every four years, the FIFA World Cup ends with a match that many players and fans consider unwanted: the bronze final, or third-place playoff. This game determines which team finishes third, while the other takes fourth place. Despite its reputation as a consolation prize, the match has been part of the tournament since 1934.
Critics argue that the third-place match is meaningless. For players who just lost a semifinal, motivation can be low. Some teams have even been accused of not taking it seriously. Yet FIFA has kept it for several reasons. First, it gives a chance for smaller nations to achieve a historic result and earn a medal. Second, the match attracts significant television audiences and sponsorship revenue. Third, it allows fans to see their teams one more time. In 2018, Belgium defeated England 2-0 to claim third place, and both teams later said they were happy to end on a winning note.
Supporters of the bronze final say it adds depth to the tournament. It rewards consistency and gives players a clear goal after a semifinal loss. While some call it an unwanted tie, others see it as a golden layer of competition that honors the effort of reaching the final four. As long as the World Cup exists, the debate over this match will likely continue.
