Hamas Names Khalil al-Hayya as New Leader

Hamas announced on Monday that Khalil al-Hayya has been elected as the new head of its political bureau. He succeeds Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza in October 2024. Al-Hayya, a senior figure in the Palestinian group, has been a key negotiator in recent years. The selection followed a run-off with former leader Khaled Meshaal, according to reports. Sinwar's death came after previous leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran in July 2024. Following Sinwar's death, Hamas had formed a collective leadership led by Muhammad Ismail Darwish, but has now returned to a single leader. Al-Hayya was targeted in an Israeli assassination attempt in Doha last year, which killed his son and others. He has been a member of Hamas since its early days and served as a negotiator during past conflicts.
