US Lawmaker Urges NYC Mayor Not to Arrest Netanyahu Over ICC Warrant

By TrendingWire Newsroom

New York Congressman Gregory Meeks has publicly urged New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to refrain from taking any action against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, should he visit the city. Meeks, a Democrat representing parts of Queens, made the comment during a CNN interview, expressing hope that Mamdani would not be 'arresting anyone' in relation to Netanyahu's potential visit. The remarks come amid ongoing debate over the International Criminal Court's (ICC) arrest warrant for Netanyahu, issued in November 2024, over alleged war crimes in Gaza. The warrant has drawn mixed reactions globally, with some U.S. lawmakers opposing its enforcement. Mayor Mamdani, also a Democrat, has previously supported Palestinian rights and criticized Israeli policies. However, he has not publicly indicated any intention to enforce the ICC warrant. Meeks' comments suggest concern that local officials might take independent action on international legal matters. The U.S. is not a party to the ICC, and Washington has rejected the court's jurisdiction over American or Israeli officials. Nevertheless, the warrant has created diplomatic tensions. As of now, no official visit by Netanyahu to New York has been announced. The situation underscores the complex interplay between local politics and international law. Meeks' appeal highlights the Biden administration's stance that the ICC should not target leaders of non-member states.
