Giant battery projects aim to solve renewable energy storage problem

From the deserts of the United Arab Emirates to cities in the US and UK, engineers are testing unusual ways to store renewable energy. The biggest challenge for solar and wind power is that they don't produce electricity all the time. Batteries can store extra power for later use, but traditional ones are expensive and have limited capacity. In the UAE, a massive clean energy project is under construction. It combines 5.2 gigawatts of solar power with 19 gigawatt-hours of battery storage. That's enough to power about 500,000 homes through the night. Developers say it will be the largest battery system in the world when completed. Other projects are exploring different technologies. One idea uses molten salt to store heat energy. Another uses a special material that mimics human sweat to cool batteries and make them last longer. In Nevada and Manchester, small trials are testing these approaches. These innovations are important because they help make renewable energy reliable around the clock. As battery costs fall, more countries can adopt clean energy without worrying about power cuts. Experts say such storage systems will be key to fighting climate change.
