US Backs Argentina in Falklands Banner Dispute, UK Seeks FIFA Probe
By TrendingWire Newsroom
The United States has defended Argentina's national football team after a banner referencing the Falkland Islands caused a diplomatic row with the United Kingdom. The banner, displayed during a recent match, showed a map of the islands with the words 'Las Malvinas son argentinas' (The Falklands are Argentine). The UK has long disputed Argentina's claim to the islands, which are a British overseas territory.
The White House statement backing Argentina could escalate tensions. Downing Street has already urged FIFA, football's world governing body, to investigate the incident. The UK government considers the banner a political statement and says it has no place in sport.
The Falklands, known as Islas Malvinas in Spanish, were the site of a brief war in 1982 between Argentina and the UK, which ended in British victory. Argentina continues to claim sovereignty over the islands, despite a 2013 referendum where residents voted overwhelmingly to remain British.
FIFA has not yet commented on the request for an investigation. The controversy adds to existing political tensions between the two nations ahead of any potential diplomatic discussions.
