Trump Criticizes Canada Over Wildfire Smoke, Threatens New Tariffs
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Donald Trump has blamed Canada for the thick smoke drifting into the United States from hundreds of wildfires burning across Canada. The former president claimed that Canada's forest management is poor and suggested that the smoke pollution is a result of negligence. He also threatened to impose additional tariffs on Canadian goods in response.
More than 800 wildfires are currently burning in Canada, including around 190 in northern Ontario. The surge in fires has been widely linked to climate change, which creates hotter and drier conditions that make forests more flammable. The smoke has caused hazardous air quality not only in parts of Canada but also in several US states, including Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, and New York. The pollution has raised concerns ahead of Sunday's World Cup final, which is set to take place at an open-air stadium in New Jersey.
Experts note that wildfire smoke often crosses borders, and that forest management alone cannot prevent such large-scale fires. Trump's comments come as tensions between the US and Canada over trade and environmental policies continue. His threat of new tariffs adds another layer of complexity to the relationship between the two countries.
Authorities on both sides of the border are monitoring the air quality and advising people to limit outdoor activities. The wildfires are expected to persist in the coming weeks, depending on weather conditions.
