Saudi AI Authority Releases Guide to Reduce Bias in Artificial Intelligence

The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) has published a new guide to help identify and reduce bias in AI systems. The AI Bias Reference Guide lists more than 100 types of bias that can affect how fair and accurate AI tools are. It explains where these biases come from, how they affect society, and offers real-world examples and ways to fix them. SDAIA says that as AI is used more in important areas like justice, healthcare, and education, it is crucial to address biases that can lead to unfair decisions. The guide warns that unchecked bias can make AI systems reinforce discrimination instead of promoting fairness. It can also harm an organization’s reputation and lead to legal problems. Some biases come from training data that does not include all groups fairly. Others come from algorithms that might favor certain traits or from wrong assumptions when interpreting data. For example, a hiring tool might prefer candidates from top universities and ignore equally good candidates from less well-known backgrounds. The guide is part of SDAIA’s larger work on responsible AI. The authority has already released its AI Ethics Principles, guidelines for generative AI, and a study on bias in AI. SDAIA says it will keep supporting knowledge and skills in advanced technologies to promote responsible use of AI and boost digital innovation.
