UN Climate Chief Praises India as 'Solar Superpower' as Clean Energy Grows

The United Nations climate chief has praised India for its rapid expansion of clean energy, calling the country a “solar superpower”. Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, noted that half of India’s installed power capacity now comes from fossil-fuel-free sources. This marks a significant step in the global shift away from coal, oil and gas. India has set ambitious goals to increase renewable energy, especially solar power. The country aims to have 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. Stiell’s remarks come as nations prepare for the next round of climate talks. Many developing countries face challenges in transitioning to clean energy, such as high costs and the need for reliable power.
