Three years after the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has completed its probe in only 10% of the registered cases, according to a report. The SIT was formed to investigate the clashes that erupted between communities in the northeastern Indian state. The slow progress has raised concerns about the pace of justice for victims. Officials have not provided reasons for the delay. The violence, which began in May 2023, led to widespread destruction and loss of life. Thousands were displaced as tensions escalated between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The SIT, comprising senior police officers, was tasked with handling the most serious cases, including murder and arson. However, out of hundreds of cases filed, only a fraction have seen completed investigations. The report indicates that many cases remain pending due to challenges such as witness intimidation, lack of evidence, and logistical difficulties in conflict-affected areas. The state government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring timely justice, but the current figures highlight the scale of the task. Families of victims continue to wait for closure as the legal process drags on.
