West Indies cricket legend Garry Sobers dies at 89
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Garfield Sobers, the legendary West Indies cricketer widely regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of the sport, has died at the age of 89. His family confirmed the news, but no cause of death was given.
Sobers played 93 Test matches for the West Indies between 1954 and 1974. In that time, he scored 8,032 runs, including 26 centuries, and took 235 wickets with his left-arm bowling. His highest Test score of 365 not out, achieved against Pakistan in 1958, stood as the world record for the highest individual innings in Test cricket for 36 years.
Sobers also made history in first-class cricket by hitting six sixes in a single over while playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan in 1968, becoming the first player to achieve that feat in top-level cricket.
Off the field, Sobers was known for his humble nature and love for the game. He was knighted in 1975 for his services to cricket. His death marks the end of an era for West Indies cricket, as he was the last surviving member of the great teams of the 1950s and 1960s. He is survived by his children and grandchildren.
Tributes have poured in from around the cricket world, with fans and former players remembering Sobers as a true icon of the sport.
