Iran has promised to retaliate after a US attack near its border with Iraq killed two people and wounded 11 others, state media reported on Thursday. The strike in Shalamcheh was part of a 12th consecutive night of US bombardments, which have also hit Bushehr, home to Iran's only civilian nuclear plant.
President Donald Trump warned that any Iranian attack on ships in the Strait of Hormuz—a key route for global oil—would be met with strikes on Iranian civilian infrastructure. "Any time Iran shoots at a ship... the United States will bomb and destroy one bridge or power plant," Trump said on social media.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on X that Iran's defense doctrine is "eye for an eye" and that anyone aiding US attacks would be considered legitimate targets. The army said retaliatory strikes would continue as long as US attacks persist.
Meanwhile, Jordan and Kuwait reported intercepting missiles on Thursday, which Iran said targeted US assets in those countries. In the Red Sea, Yemen's Houthis claimed to have struck two Saudi oil tankers. Saudi Arabia confirmed one tanker, the Encelia, was hit. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Houthis were "suckered" by Iran into attacking shipping.
Oman said it is working to restart talks between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia to de-escalate the situation.
