Mali reports counterattack after rebel attack on army convoy
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Authorities in Mali say security forces have launched a counterattack after armed groups attacked a military convoy in the northern Gao region. The attack, which took place on Monday, resulted in what rebel fighters described as 'human losses' and 'material damage' to the army. Officials have not yet released details on casualties, but confirmed that operations are ongoing to secure the area and pursue the attackers.
The Gao region has been a hotspot of instability since Mali's northern territories fell under the control of various rebel and jihadist groups following a coup in 2012. Despite a peace agreement signed in 2015, violence has persisted, with armed groups frequently targeting military convoys and peacekeeping forces. The latest incident underscores the fragile security situation in the Sahel nation, which has also faced a growing insurgency linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
Mali's military, supported by French and United Nations forces, has been struggling to contain the violence. The attack comes as the country prepares for a constitutional referendum, part of a transition back to civilian rule after a series of coups. No group immediately claimed responsibility for Monday's assault, but suspicion often falls on the Coordination of Azawad Movements or jihadist factions. The government has vowed to restore order and bring those responsible to justice.
