New Israeli law targets Palestinian schools in East Jerusalem
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Israel's parliament, the Knesset, has passed a law that critics say aims to dismantle the Palestinian education system in East Jerusalem. The legislation allows the Israeli government to take control of Palestinian educational institutions in the city, which has been under Israeli occupation since 1967. East Jerusalem is home to a large Palestinian population, and its schools operate under a separate curriculum from Israeli schools. Supporters of the law argue that it is necessary to ensure that all schools in Jerusalem follow the Israeli curriculum and promote loyalty to the state. However, Palestinian leaders and human rights groups condemn the move as an attempt to erase Palestinian identity and culture in the city. They say it violates international law, which recognizes East Jerusalem as occupied territory. The United Nations and several countries have previously called on Israel to respect the rights of Palestinians in East Jerusalem. The new law could affect thousands of students and teachers in the area. The Israeli government has not yet announced how it will implement the law, but it is expected to face legal challenges and international criticism.
