SpiceJet Fined Rs 1 Lakh for Using 'Dark Patterns' on Booking Platform
By TrendingWire Newsroom
India's low-cost airline SpiceJet has been fined Rs 1 lakh by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) for using deceptive design techniques, known as 'dark patterns', on its online booking platform. The CCPA stated that such practices undermine consumers' ability to make informed decisions and violate principles of fair and transparent engagement.
Dark patterns refer to user interface designs that intentionally mislead or trick users into taking actions they might not otherwise take, such as purchasing unnecessary add-ons or agreeing to unwanted subscriptions. The CCPA's action follows an investigation that found SpiceJet's booking interface employed these tactics, impairing consumer autonomy.
The fine was levied under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. This is part of a broader regulatory crackdown on unfair trade practices in e-commerce. The CCPA has previously penalized other companies for similar violations. SpiceJet has not publicly commented on the penalty.
Consumer advocates welcome the move, noting that dark patterns are increasingly common across digital platforms. They urge regulators to remain vigilant to protect online shoppers from manipulation. The Rs 1 lakh fine serves as a warning to businesses that such practices will not be tolerated.
