Over 2,700 Heat-Related Deaths in England and Wales During 2026 Heatwaves

By TrendingWire Newsroom

A new study estimates that more than 2,700 people died from heat-related causes in England and Wales during the record-breaking heatwaves of May and June 2026. The rapid analysis was conducted by researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Imperial College London, and the Met Office. Excess deaths are the number of fatalities above the expected average for that time of year. The study attributes these deaths to two intense heatwaves that pushed temperatures to unprecedented levels. The researchers used temperature data and mortality records to calculate the estimate. The findings highlight the growing health risks of extreme heat, which scientists say are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Heatwaves can cause heatstroke, dehydration, and worsen existing conditions like heart and lung diseases. The study is a rapid analysis, meaning it is based on preliminary data and will be refined later. The authors call for better heatwave warning systems and public health measures to protect vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. This is one of the highest numbers of heat-related deaths recorded in such a short period in the region. The UK government has said it is reviewing its heat health strategies in light of the findings.
