Madhya Pradesh Passes Uniform Civil Code Bill for Equal Rights

By TrendingWire Newsroom

Madhya Pradesh has passed a new Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, a move that Chief Minister Mohan Yadav called a 'landmark decision' aimed at ensuring equal rights, opportunities, and justice for all citizens. The bill introduces key changes, including monogamy as a legal requirement and equal inheritance rights for men and women, regardless of their religion. Currently, India has different personal laws for different religious communities, covering matters like marriage, divorce, and inheritance. The UCC seeks to replace these with a common set of rules for all citizens. Proponents argue it promotes gender equality and national unity, while critics say it could interfere with religious freedom. Madhya Pradesh becomes the second state after Uttarakhand to pass such a bill. The legislation now awaits approval from the state governor before it becomes law. Yadav stated that the bill is designed to ensure fairness and consistency in family matters. The passing of the bill has sparked debate across the country, with some praising it as a step toward modernization and others expressing concerns about its impact on minority communities. The state government asserts that the UCC will simplify legal processes and reduce discrimination.
