UK Mosquitoes Found Capable of Spreading Bird Malaria

By TrendingWire Newsroom

Mosquitoes are well-known for spreading diseases like malaria and dengue fever to humans. However, their role in transmitting illnesses to wild birds is less understood. A new study has identified several mosquito species in the United Kingdom that can carry the parasite responsible for avian malaria. The parasite, called Plasmodium, causes avian malaria in birds around the world, including in the UK. Until now, scientists were unsure which mosquito species were mainly responsible for spreading it. The research, conducted by a UK-based scientist, examined different mosquito populations and found that multiple species can harbor the Plasmodium parasite. This finding is important because it helps researchers understand how avian malaria spreads among bird populations. It may also aid in predicting how the disease could affect vulnerable bird species, especially as climate change alters mosquito habitats. The study does not suggest any immediate risk to humans, as avian malaria is not known to infect people. However, it highlights the complexity of mosquito-borne diseases and the need for ongoing monitoring. Further research is planned to explore the interactions between mosquitoes, birds, and the parasite in more detail.
