Iran has proposed a temporary arrangement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz under which traffic in one direction and part of the traffic in the opposite direction would pass through Iranian waters, giving Tehran greater control. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced the plan on state TV Tuesday, saying Tehran rejected an Omani proposal for an equal division of transit routes, as it did not address Iran's security concerns amid US-Israeli attacks. He warned that if Muscat rejects Iran's proposal, the strait would remain closed, adding that Tehran never recognized the alternative southern route along Oman's coast. Separately, Iran rejected a claim by US President Donald Trump that ships damaged by Iran in the Gulf would be compensated from frozen Iranian funds.
