Iran's Oil Threat Moves Beyond Strait of Hormuz to Pipelines
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Oil and gas producers in the Persian Gulf are scrambling to find alternative routes for their exports as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalate. The narrow waterway, through which about 20% of the world's oil passes, has come under renewed threat from Iran. But experts now warn that Iran may also target pipelines designed to bypass the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies. Iran has previously threatened to block the strait in response to sanctions or military action. However, Gulf states have invested in pipelines to reduce their dependence on the waterway, such as the Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline and the Petroline across Saudi Arabia.
Recent attacks on oil tankers near the strait have raised concerns that Iran is expanding its tactics. Some analysts believe Iran may also consider disrupting pipeline operations, either through cyberattacks or sabotage. This would extend the threat beyond the strait and complicate efforts to secure alternative export routes.
While Gulf nations are exploring new options, including overland pipelines and increased storage capacity, the potential for Iranian interference remains high. The situation underscores the vulnerability of global energy infrastructure to geopolitical tensions.
