Global hunger falls for third straight year, but UN warns progress is uneven

A new United Nations report shows that global hunger decreased for the third year in a row in 2025. However, the report warns that these improvements are fragile and not happening fast enough to meet the goal of ending hunger by 2030. The report, titled The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026, was released Tuesday by five UN agencies: the Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, UNICEF, the World Food Programme, and the World Health Organization. According to the report, progress in reducing hunger has been made in some regions, but many areas still face serious challenges. The improvements are unevenly distributed, meaning that while some countries see fewer hungry people, others continue to struggle with food insecurity. This uneven progress puts the Sustainable Development Goal of zero hunger by 2030 further out of reach. The report highlights that despite the overall decline, millions of people around the world still do not have enough to eat. Conflict, climate change, and economic problems are among the main reasons why hunger remains high in certain regions. The UN agencies call for stronger efforts to address the root causes of hunger and to ensure that the benefits of progress reach everyone. Without more urgent action, the goal of ending hunger by 2030 will not be achieved.
