About 80 million years ago, powerful monsoon rains and tropical cyclones battered a stretch of coastline in what is now northeastern Italy. These storms carried the bodies of dinosaurs, crocodiles, and plants, along with river mud, onto a tidal flat. There, the tides and a thin layer of microbes helped preserve the remains in exceptional detail.
Scientists studying the site describe it as a natural graveyard formed by repeated storm events. The combination of storm surges and tidal action buried the carcasses quickly, while microbial films prevented decay. This process allowed soft tissues and even delicate plant structures to be preserved, which is rare in the fossil record.
The site provides a snapshot of life from the Late Cretaceous period. It shows that the region was once a tropical environment teeming with diverse animals and plants. The fossils include not only large dinosaurs but also smaller reptiles and vegetation.
Researchers hope that further study of the site will reveal more about ancient ecosystems and how storms shaped the fossil record. The discovery highlights how extreme weather events can sometimes create conditions that preserve history.
