WASHINGTON (TrendingWire) — President Donald Trump has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn an $83.3 million defamation verdict awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll in 2024, according to court filings. Trump is represented in the appeal by the Department of Justice, which argues that the award should be thrown out. The case stems from a lawsuit in which Carroll accused Trump of defaming her after she publicly alleged he sexually assaulted her in the 1990s. A jury in New York ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million in damages, including compensatory and punitive amounts. Trump has already paid Carroll more than $5 million from a separate 2023 lawsuit, in which a jury found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The Supreme Court last month declined to hear Trump’s challenge to that $5 million verdict. The DOJ’s involvement in the $83.3 million case is unusual, as the department typically does not represent presidents in personal matters. The appeal asks the justices to consider whether Trump is immune from liability for statements made while in office. The court has not yet decided whether to take up the case.
