Clacton By-Election Draws Record 34 Candidates, Including Farage
By TrendingWire Newsroom
The upcoming by-election in Clacton, England, has attracted a record 34 candidates, the largest number in a UK by-election in decades. Among them is Nigel Farage, the former UKIP leader and prominent Brexit campaigner. The rest of the field includes 20 independent candidates and several so-called 'joke' candidates, such as those representing novelty parties or running for fun.
By-elections in the UK often see a wide range of hopefuls, but the 34 candidates in Clacton stand out. The high number may be due to the publicity surrounding Farage's candidacy. The by-election was called after the sitting MP, Giles Watling of the Conservative Party, stood down for health reasons.
Joke candidates are a tradition in British politics, with parties like the Official Monster Raving Loony Party often fielding candidates to highlight what they see as political absurdities. However, the sheer number of independents also reflects local dissatisfaction with mainstream parties.
The election will be held on July 20. Farage is expected to win, given his high profile and the area's strong support for Brexit, but the mix of candidates ensures an unusual ballot paper. Voters will face a long list of names, which could lead to some confusion at polling stations.
