Andy Burnham Takes Over as UK Prime Minister, Promises ‘10-Year Plan’
By TrendingWire Newsroom
London, UK – Andy Burnham became the country’s new prime minister today, succeeding Keir Starmer, who delivered his farewell speech from Downing Street earlier. This marks the sixth change in prime minister in just over a decade. Burnham, a former mayor of Greater Manchester, is widely seen as one of the most popular politicians in the country. His Labour Party decided to replace Starmer, who had become a drag on the party’s electoral prospects, with Burnham, who enjoys broad support among both the public and his own party. In his first speech, Burnham outlined a “ten-year plan for the country,” acknowledging that the UK is “not in the right place structurally.” He also mentioned that he is not necessarily expecting to stay in power for the full decade but wants to set a long-term direction. One issue he highlighted from his campaign was frustration over the frozen personal allowance of £12,570, which has hurt many families. Burnham cautioned against simply labeling him as a “tax raiser,” saying the situation is more complex. Later today, he is expected to name his cabinet, which could test party unity. The transition is seen as a strategic move by Labour to boost its chances in future elections.
