Normandy's D-Day beaches considered for UNESCO World Heritage status

The beaches of Normandy, where Allied forces landed on D-Day in 1944, may soon be added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The decision is expected between July 24 and 27, according to the UN cultural agency. If approved, the designation would recognize the beaches' 'outstanding universal value' and increase their global profile. The effort to secure the listing began nearly 20 years ago. The proposed site includes several landing beaches, such as one where Allied troops built an artificial harbor to support the invasion. D-Day, on June 6, 1944, was a turning point in World War II, leading to the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control. UNESCO World Heritage sites are selected for their cultural or natural significance to humanity. Other wartime sites, like Hiroshima's atomic bomb dome, are already on the list. Supporters say the Normandy beaches deserve similar recognition for their role in history. The area already attracts millions of visitors each year who come to pay respects at museums, cemeteries, and memorials. A UNESCO listing could boost tourism and help preserve the beaches for future generations.
