Sean Astin Urges California Governor to Fund Film Postproduction Tax Credit

By TrendingWire Newsroom

Sean Astin, president of the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG‑AFTRA), is calling on California Governor Gavin Newsom to provide funding for a postproduction tax incentive. The proposed legislation, known as AB 2319, aims to keep film and television postproduction work in California by offering tax credits to companies that perform editing, visual effects, and other postproduction tasks in the state. Astin describes the current situation as an "all-hands-on-deck moment" for the entertainment industry, which has been losing postproduction jobs to other states and countries that offer more generous incentives. He argues that the bill would help preserve California's role as a global leader in entertainment and support thousands of skilled workers. The union chief is urging Newsom to include the funding in the state budget, emphasizing that the industry is still recovering from the pandemic and recent strikes. The bill has already passed the California State Assembly and is awaiting action in the Senate. If approved, it would provide up to $250 million annually in tax credits for postproduction projects. Supporters say the measure will not only protect jobs but also boost the local economy by attracting more film and television production to California. Opponents, however, express concerns about the cost and potential for abuse. Astin's involvement signals growing pressure on the governor to act before the legislative session ends.
