The Hollywood Foreign Press Association filed an antitrust lawsuit Tuesday against Penske Media Corporation, accusing the media company of fraudulently taking control of the Golden Globe Awards. The suit, filed in federal court in Los Angeles, alleges that PMC orchestrated a scheme to dismantle the 80-year-old organization that founded the awards show. According to the complaint, PMC acquired the Golden Globes in 2023 through a “sham process tainted by fraud.” The HFPA claims that the purchase was designed to strip the association of its assets and influence. Penske Media, which owns Variety and other entertainment publications, has not yet issued a public response. The lawsuit seeks to undo the acquisition and recover damages. The Golden Globes, one of the most prominent awards ceremonies in Hollywood, had been run by the HFPA for decades before the sale. The association has faced criticism in recent years over its lack of diversity and ethical practices, leading to reforms and the eventual sale. The legal action marks a significant escalation in the dispute over the future of the awards show.
