Bryson DeChambeau penalized two strokes at The Open

By TrendingWire Newsroom

Bryson DeChambeau received a two-stroke penalty during the second round of The Open Championship for illegally improving his lie on the fifth hole. The penalty turned his score on that hole from a bogey to a triple-bogey seven. After a lengthy review with officials, DeChambeau's scorecard was adjusted, dropping him to five under par and into a tie for fifth place. He had originally shot a 68. The American golfer was penalized under Rule 8.1a, which prohibits improving the conditions affecting the stroke. Brandel Chamblee, a golf analyst, criticized DeChambeau's actions, saying he did everything but take a weed whacker to the grass. The penalty cost DeChambeau two shots and moved him further behind the leaders. Despite the setback, he remained in contention heading into the weekend. The incident sparked debate about player conduct and enforcement of rules.
