Kung Fu Gains Ground in Ivory Coast as Official Leads Standardization Effort

By TrendingWire Newsroom

A senior tax official in Ivory Coast is also a driving force behind the growing popularity of Chinese martial arts in the West African nation. Meite Siaka, who serves as deputy mayor of Kani and a lecturer at the National School of Administration, is the founding president of the Ivorian Federation of Chinese Martial Arts (FIAMC). Established in 2008, the federation now plays a key role in standardizing the practice of kung fu across the country. Siaka, a master and instructor himself, runs several martial arts clubs. His dual role in government and martial arts reflects the deep roots kung fu has planted in Ivory Coast since the Bruce Lee craze of the 1970s. Chinese films introduced the art to many Ivorians, and today, kung fu is practiced by thousands. The federation works to ensure consistent training and certification, helping kung fu gain recognition as both a sport and a cultural practice. Siaka says the goal is to promote discipline and physical fitness while preserving the traditional aspects of the martial art. Ivory Coast has become a regional hub for Chinese martial arts in West Africa, with FIAMC organizing competitions and cultural exchanges. The federation's efforts have drawn interest from young Ivorians eager to learn more than just the physical moves—they also embrace the philosophy behind kung fu. As the art continues to spread, Siaka and other leaders hope to see it included in school programs across the country.
