The divide within the WNBA over transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports intensified this week as players took opposing public stances and a small rally was held in support of one player’s comments.
Days after Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said she defended “biological women” in sports, Chicago Sky center Stefanie Dolson wore a shirt reading “Trans Rights are Human Rights” before a game against the Fever in Chicago. Dolson’s gesture appeared to be a direct counterpoint to Cunningham’s remarks, which had sparked debate across the league.
Separately, a few dozen demonstrators gathered in Seattle to show support for Cunningham and for state initiatives that would bar transgender athletes from competing on girls’ sports teams. According to CBS Sports, the Fever organization stated it had “no knowledge” of the rally beforehand.
The WNBA has seen growing tension around transgender player inclusion. While some players and teams have publicly supported trans rights, others have voiced concerns about fairness and safety in women’s sports. Cunningham’s comments and Dolson’s response underscore the lack of consensus within the league.
Neither the Fever nor the Sky issued official statements on the matter. The rally in Seattle remained peaceful, and no counter-protests were reported.
