Czech lawmakers visit China in first high-level talks since 2019

A group of Czech lawmakers led by the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Tomio Okamura, is visiting China. This marks the first high-level engagement between the two countries since 2019, following years of tension. Chinese analysts described the visit as “testing the waters” rather than a sign of a major thaw in relations. Okamura told local media he hopes to secure agreements on more direct flights, an increase in Chinese tourist numbers, and visa-free travel for Czech citizens. Representatives from 40 Czech firms are also part of the delegation, aiming to explore business opportunities. The visit comes after a period of strained ties between Prague and Beijing, partly due to disagreements over human rights and trade. Analysts say it remains to be seen whether the trip will lead to concrete improvements in bilateral relations. The delegation is expected to meet with Chinese officials and business leaders during the visit.
