Japan Changes Imperial Succession Law but Still Bars Women from Throne
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Japan's parliament has approved changes to the imperial succession laws in an effort to ensure the royal family line continues. However, the new rules still prevent women from becoming emperor. Under the revised law, female members of the imperial family will be allowed to remain in the family after marriage, which was previously not permitted. But the ban on women ascending to the Chrysanthemum Throne remains in place.
The move comes as Japan faces a shrinking pool of eligible heirs. Currently, only three males are in line for the throne: Emperor Naruhito's younger brother, Crown Prince Akishino; Akishino's son, Prince Hisahito; and the emperor's uncle, Prince Hitachi. Many Japanese people support allowing women to become emperor. A recent poll showed that a majority of the public favors a female monarch. Princess Aiko, the emperor's only child, is a popular figure and would be next in line if gender were not a barrier.
The debate over female succession has been ongoing for years. Traditionalists argue that the imperial line must be passed only through male heirs to maintain historical continuity. Reformers say the rules are outdated and need to change to reflect modern gender equality. The current revision is seen as a compromise that addresses the immediate issue of the declining number of royal family members but does not resolve the broader question of female emperors.
The new law also allows empresses who married commoners to return to the imperial family if they divorce. But critics say this is not enough. They want a clear path for women to inherit the throne. The government has said it will continue to study the issue, but no further changes are planned for now.
