Trump Demands Canada Compensate US for Wildfire Smoke Damage

By TrendingWire Newsroom

US President Donald Trump has called on Canada to take responsibility for the smoke from wildfires in Ontario that has drifted into several American states. Speaking after attending the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, Trump said he discussed the issue with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. "I have a good relationship with Mark Carney, but we’ve got to stop the fires up there," Trump told reporters. The president’s comments come a day after he threatened to impose additional tariffs on Canadian goods as punishment for the smoke pollution. Trump argued that Canada must do a better job of controlling the wildfires, which have caused poor air quality and health concerns in parts of the United States. Ontario has been experiencing a severe wildfire season, with hundreds of blazes burning across the province. Smoke from these fires has been carried south by winds, affecting states such as New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. The smoke has led to air quality alerts and health advisories in those regions. Trump did not specify what form of damages he expects from Canada, but his comments signal a new point of tension between the two neighboring countries. The US and Canada have a longstanding trade relationship, but Trump has frequently criticized Canada over trade imbalances and other issues. Meanwhile, Canadian officials have yet to respond publicly to Trump’s demands. The prime minister’s office said Carney and Trump had a brief conversation at the World Cup final, but provided no further details.
