Electrician Pre-Apprenticeship Programs Don't Guarantee Jobs, Graduates Say
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Two graduates of an electrical pre-apprenticeship program in London, Ontario, say finding an employer to take them on as apprentices has been much harder than learning the trade. The program was supposed to give them a head start, but weeks after finishing, they still haven't found work. Industry leaders say these pre-apprenticeship programs offer useful training, but they are no guarantee of a job. The main reason is a limited number of apprenticeship positions. Many employers prefer to hire people who are already registered apprentices, leaving graduates of pre-apprenticeship programs in a tough spot. One graduate spent months applying and calling companies with no success. Another said the program gave good skills but not the connection needed to get a foot in the door. Pre-apprenticeship programs are common across Canada. They are designed to prepare people for skilled trades, but the path to full certification requires finding an employer willing to sponsor and train them. Without enough apprenticeship spots, even well-trained graduates struggle. The electrical trade is in demand, but the bottleneck remains. For now, graduates are advised to keep networking and consider applying to companies directly, but many find it discouraging after completing a program that promised a clearer route to a career.
