Convoy organizer Pat King ordered resentenced after appeal

By TrendingWire Newsroom

Pat King, a key organizer of the 2022 “Freedom Convoy” protests that paralyzed downtown Ottawa for weeks, will be resentenced after the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled that his original punishment was too lenient. The court sided with Crown prosecutors, who argued that the sentence did not adequately reflect the seriousness of his offenses. King was convicted for his role in the massive protests against COVID-19 restrictions. The demonstrations, which began in late January 2022, saw hundreds of trucks block streets and honk horns for nearly a month, causing significant disruption and economic damage. The court found that King's actions included encouraging protesters to ignore police orders and promoting continued blockades. His original sentence was criticized as insufficient given the scale and impact of the protests. The appeal court has now ordered a new sentencing hearing, where a stricter penalty could be imposed. King’s legal team said they will consider further legal options. The case remains a contentious issue in Canada, reflecting ongoing divisions over pandemic measures and protest rights.
