Evacuation Order Lifted for Fort Simpson; Residents to Return Saturday
By TrendingWire Newsroom
The village of Fort Simpson in Canada’s Northwest Territories has lifted its evacuation order, allowing residents to start returning home on Saturday, local officials announced. The order was issued earlier this week after a safety threat forced the community to leave. Details of the specific danger were not provided, but authorities confirmed that conditions have improved enough for a safe return.
Fort Simpson, a small community of about 1,200 people located at the confluence of the Mackenzie and Liard rivers, had been under evacuation since mid-week. Evacuees were directed to temporary shelters in nearby communities. The municipal government coordinated bus transportation for residents wishing to return, with the first buses scheduled to depart on Friday evening.
Officials urged returning residents to remain cautious and check for any hazards, such as structural damage or utility issues, before settling back in. They also advised keeping emergency supplies on hand in case of further developments. The lifting of the order comes as a relief to many who were displaced.
No injuries or major property damage have been reported. The local emergency management team will continue to monitor the situation.
