Former Blue Jays pitcher Duane Ward dies at 62
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Duane Ward, a former relief pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays and a two-time World Series champion, has died at the age of 62. The Blue Jays confirmed that Ward died of natural causes in Toronto. No further details were provided.
Ward was a key part of the Blue Jays' bullpen during the team's consecutive World Series victories in 1992 and 1993. He was known for his powerful fastball and slider, which made him one of the top relievers in baseball during his prime. Over his nine-year Major League Baseball career, all with Toronto, Ward posted a 3.28 earned run average and recorded 121 saves. He was named an All-Star in 1993 and finished sixth in Cy Young Award voting that same year.
Ward was drafted by the Blue Jays in 1982 and made his debut in 1986. He became the team's closer in 1991 and saved 45 games in 1993, a franchise record at the time. Injuries cut his career short, and he retired after the 1995 season.
The Blue Jays released a statement expressing condolences to Ward's family and friends, calling him a beloved member of the organization. Fans and former teammates also paid tribute on social media, remembering his contributions to the team's success.
Ward's death marks the loss of another member of the Blue Jays' championship teams, joining other former players who have passed away in recent years.
