Mitsubishi Electric Considers Power-Chip Merger with Rohm and Toshiba
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Mitsubishi Electric is reportedly in talks to merge its power-chip business with those of Rohm and Toshiba. The move would combine three of the world's top suppliers of power semiconductors, a key component in electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and industrial equipment. Power chips manage and convert electricity in devices, and demand is surging as the world shifts to greener energy. If completed, the merger would create a major competitor to global leaders like Infineon and ON Semiconductor. The three Japanese firms have expertise in different areas: Mitsubishi in high-voltage chips, Rohm in analog devices, and Toshiba in discrete semiconductors. Pooling resources could help them cut costs, boost research, and secure supply chains. The Japanese government has encouraged consolidation in the semiconductor industry to strengthen national competitiveness. However, the talks are still early, and regulatory hurdles may arise. No official confirmation has been made. The potential deal highlights the growing importance of power chips in modern electronics and the push for Japan to retain a leading role. Investors are watching closely, as a merger could reshape the market.
