China Tightens Urban Drone Rules, Citing Security Fears

By TrendingWire Newsroom

China has quietly tightened rules on civilian drone flights in most cities, sharply reducing the once-common sight of drones hovering over landmarks like Shanghai's Huangpu River. For years, drones captured stunning aerial views of the city's iconic skyline, but now such flights are heavily restricted. The move reflects a nationwide crackdown on civilian drone use, driven by security concerns that have been magnified by the war in Ukraine, where drones have been used for surveillance and attacks. Under the new regulations, most drone flights are banned in urban areas without special permits. Operators must register their drones and follow strict no-fly zones, including over sensitive government buildings, transport hubs, and crowded areas. The rules apply to recreational and commercial drones alike. Violators face fines and confiscation of equipment. The changes follow a pattern of increasing control over technology that could pose security risks. China was once the world's largest commercial drone market, with millions of hobbyists and professionals using drones for photography, delivery, and inspections. Now, many of those activities are no longer allowed in cities. The government says the rules are necessary to protect public safety and national security. The exact number of permits issued since the crackdown is not public.
