West Indies cricket great Sir Garfield Sobers passes away at 89

Sir Garfield Sobers, the legendary West Indies cricketer widely regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of the sport, has died at the age of 89. His family confirmed the news, prompting an outpouring of tributes from the cricket world.
Sobers played for the West Indies from 1954 to 1974, captaining the side in 39 Test matches. He was a rare talent who excelled as a batsman, bowler, and fielder. In 93 Tests, he scored 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78, including 26 centuries. His highest Test score of 365 not out against Pakistan in 1958 stood as the world record for 36 years. As a bowler, he took 235 wickets with his left-arm pace and spin, often swinging games single-handedly.
Off the field, Sobers was knighted in 1975 for his services to cricket. He remained a beloved figure in Barbados and across the Caribbean. Many fellow cricketers and fans have called him the greatest to have played the game. His death marks the end of an era for West Indies cricket, which he helped define with his elegance and competitive spirit.
