Russia Recruits Thousands of African Fighters for Ukraine War
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Russia has been recruiting African soldiers to fight in its war in Ukraine, according to a monitoring platform linked to Ukraine's defense ministry. The Stop Russian Recruiters platform has identified nearly 3,000 recruits from Africa. About one in six of them has been killed in combat. The recruitment efforts have hit several African countries hardest, including Cameroon, Ghana, Egypt, and Kenya. These nations have seen many of their citizens sign up to fight for Russia, often lured by promises of money or other benefits. The war, which started in February 2022, has led to heavy casualties on both sides. Russia has sought foreign fighters to bolster its forces, including from countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The exact number of African recruits may be higher, as not all cases are reported. The platform's data provides a glimpse into Russia's use of foreign soldiers. The recruits come from various backgrounds, some with military experience and others without. The high death rate among them highlights the dangerous conditions on the front lines. Ukraine has also reported foreign fighters joining its side, but the scale of Russian recruitment from Africa is notable. The situation raises questions about the ethics of recruiting from poorer nations for a foreign war.
