Astronomers Map Magnetic Field of Galaxy Cluster for First Time

For the first time, astronomers have reconstructed the magnetic field of a galaxy cluster using a new, record-breaking map. The achievement provides fresh insight into how these massive structures form and evolve. Galaxy clusters are the largest objects in the universe, containing hundreds or thousands of galaxies bound together by gravity. They also hold vast amounts of hot gas and magnetic fields. Until now, scientists could not map these magnetic fields in detail. Using data from radio telescopes, researchers created a map that reveals the strength and direction of the magnetic field in a cluster located about 2.4 billion light-years away. The map is the most detailed ever made for such a structure. The team focused on radio waves emitted by high-energy particles trapped in the magnetic field. These emissions, known as radio halos, are enormous—sometimes spanning millions of light-years. The study suggests that the process of galaxy clusters colliding and merging may be what powers these radio halos. "We believe that the mechanism that 'turns on' these gigantic radio emissions is linked to the formation process of galaxy clusters," said the lead researcher.
