France Condemns Iran for Detaining Embassy Officials
By TrendingWire Newsroom
France has warned Iran of consequences after two of its embassy staff in Tehran were detained for several hours by Iranian security forces. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said the officials were held without reason, interrogated, and one was assaulted before being released. In a post on social media, Barrot stated that he informed Iran's foreign minister that such violations of diplomatic immunities are unacceptable and will not go without a response. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, according to Barrot. He described it as an extremely serious intimidation tactic. Diplomatic immunity, established under the Vienna Conventions, protects embassy staff from detention and harassment. The detention comes amid ongoing tensions between France and Iran over various issues, including Iran's nuclear program and human rights. France has previously criticized Iran for its treatment of protesters and its military support for Russia in Ukraine. The French government has not yet specified what actions it will take, but Barrot emphasized that there would be consequences. Iran has not publicly commented on the incident. The development marks another low point in relations between the two countries, which have been strained for years.
