Plas Johnson, the saxophonist best known for the iconic ‘Pink Panther Theme,’ has died at the age of 94. His death was reported by Rolling Stone.
Johnson was a prolific session musician who played on recordings for some of the biggest names in music, including Frank Sinatra, B.B. King, Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye, and the Beach Boys. His smooth saxophone sound graced countless hits across genres like jazz, pop, and R&B.
Born in New Orleans in 1933, Johnson grew up surrounded by music. He began his professional career in the 1950s, quickly becoming a sought-after player in Los Angeles studios. His most famous performance was the tenor saxophone solo on Henry Mancini’s ‘Pink Panther Theme’ from the 1963 film. The playful, slinking melody became instantly recognizable and remains one of the most famous saxophone riffs in movie history.
Johnson’s versatility allowed him to work with artists from different eras, from rock and soul to easy listening. He also released several solo albums and continued performing into his later years.
