Asmita Dey became the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games judo gold medal, defeating Canada's Heidi Quach in the women's 48kg final. The victory, secured in a gripping golden score, came seven months after her father's death, a loss that made her feel everything was over. Her father had always encouraged her to dream big. Dey credited the Sports Authority of India's Bhopal centre for backing her progress.
In the same competition, Harsh Singh also won gold in the men's 60kg event. The two victories marked a significant breakthrough for Indian judo. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath praised Dey and called her 'Maa Bharati'.
