Nick Reiner, 32, has been indicted by a Los Angeles County grand jury on two counts of murder in the December stabbing deaths of his parents, actor and director Rob Reiner and photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner. The indictment adds a special circumstance of lying in wait, making Reiner eligible for the death penalty, though prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek capital punishment.
Reiner pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include special circumstance allegations. If convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, or death if prosecutors pursue it. He has been held without bail since his parents' bodies were found in their Brentwood home on the first day of Hanukkah last year.
The grand jury indictment moves the case forward without a public preliminary hearing, allowing prosecutors to expedite the trial process. Reiner was initially charged with two counts of murder; the new indictment adds the lying-in-wait allegation. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman's team has not announced a decision on the death penalty.
